Preview: Keb Darge Interview

Keb and DJ Shadow, Deep Funk, Japan.

Preview: Keb Darge interview out next month in Slitz Magazine.

What do you think of Hip-Hop Producers who use Funk and Soul samples?

I don’t care. I’ve had them all round the house, Marley Marl, J Dilla… They came round and they had their DAT Machine and they were copying all my records and they are all nice guys you know but then they play their records to me. Like Pete Rock used a thing, it was an old 60’s soul drum break, he played the record to me and I was like the original is better. I don’t mind if someone takes something and makes something really good out if it. Fair enough I’ll let them use my music to go where they’re going but they never seem to go anywhere that satisfies me but it satisfies all the hip-hop crowd.

DJ Shadow is one of my best mates, we swap records regularly and we do a thing in Japan every Christmas, Deep Funk Japan and I love him. He wont send me the stuff he does now because he says that I’m just going to slag it off and I’m like yes I am Josh. Him and Cut Chemist are great with all the tricks but when I listen to their tunes it does nothing for me. When I first heard those guys in the RAF base, when they put their records on it was like tingles but I can’t get that from this post 1980 music. Amy Winehouse did it but it wasn’t like what’s this? It was more like wow someone who can sing, singing real songs. Music is too false and too contrived. A lot of its contrived to be rebellious and rough therefore its not rough. You can tell when they are playing it that they are trying too hard to be rough.
